Airline Security Information
In recent years, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has significantly increased security measures at all U.S. airports. We urge you to take the TSA guidelines into account when packing for your trip and arriving at the airport. At this time, passengers are advised to arrive at the airport no later than two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight in order to clear security procedures.
TSA security guidelines are adjusted frequently. To be sure you have the latest information on procedures, visit the TSA website or you can call the TSA toll-free at 1-866-289-9673 during the following hours of operation:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Saturday, Sunday, and holidays, 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
REAL ID Act
In 2005, in order to bolster security in the United States, Congress passed the REAL ID Act, which established rules for states to follow for issuing driver’s licenses and ID cards that are acceptable for entry into secure federal areas. Starting on October 1, 2021, travelers flying domestically who wish to board with a driver’s license, will need to ensure that it’s REAL ID-compliant. Other acceptable forms of identification for boarding domestic flights besides REAL ID-compliant licenses include:
- U.S. military IDs
- Permanent resident cards
- Homeland Security-trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, FAST)
- And others (check here for a complete list of acceptable forms of ID)
To obtain a REAL ID, visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles website to find out what documentation is required. At a minimum, you must provide proof of your: 1) Full Legal Name; 2) Date of Birth; 3) Social Security Number; 4) Two Proofs of Address of Principal Residence; and 5) Residency Status. Additional information may be required depending on the state, so check with your state’s DMV website before visiting in person. REAL ID-compliant licenses are marked by a star on the top of the card. Check here for an example of what your REAL ID should look like by state.
Please be sure to have an allowable form of ID with you when you arrive for your domestic flight. As always, a valid passport will still be required for international travel. Failure to obtain necessary travel documents prior to departure is not usually covered under standard trip cancellation insurance policies.
